Summary

The project re-organises the ground floor of a two level Victorian terrace. The primary form of the house is largely left untouched and all of its heritage features are retained and restored. The new works demolish the secondary wing with adjoining kitchen addition and replace it with what is conceptualised as an extruded ‘black box’ in which smooth, fluid and flowing forms define the new spaces and functions. The ‘black box’ envelope responds to the heritage of the area in height and roof pitch, whilst internally, a curved wall drives movement and vision through the kitchen into the rear hub of the house. A dialogue between the contemporary and the historic is established with a blurring off the intersection between new and old, the new ceiling plane wraps into the Victorian formal dining room whilst slick new cabinetry redefines the existing staircase.
